Backwards is okay, right?

Last post I mentioned all the books I’ve read over the last week.  Well, this morning I finished Kushiel’s Mercy, which is the 6th (or 2nd third) book in the Kushiel’s Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey.  What an amazing series.  I actually think of it as two trilogies, since the first three books are really about the trials and tribulations of Pheadre no Montreave and the next three are about her foster son Imriel.  These are fantasy novels set in an alternate world that in many ways seems like medieval Europe, but is a place of magic.  This is a where someone resembling Mary Magdalene gave birth to child who became a sort of god, and his followers settled this land.

These books are wonderful; full of fully-realized characters, suspense, intrigue, love, desire, and amazing sex.  I was drawn to the first book because of it’s cover, actually but it is the fabulous story that keeps me coming back.  I feel for these characters-mourn their losses and applaud their triumphs.  Much like another favourite of mine, Guy Gavriel Kay, Carey takes the familiar and makes it magical.  Read these books.  Love them.  Give them to friends.  They are truly worth sharing.
