Escaping it all

I’ve finally finished Magic Kingdom for Sale: Sold! by Terry Brooks.  I did wonder how I’d missed it in the 20 or so  years since it was written, but in hindsight I’m not upset by that.  It’s classic escape fantasy: the protagonists life as it is has no appeal, nothing to hold him, so he ends up in a fantasy world that needs him, even if it doesn’t really want him.  I didn’t hate the book by any stretch of the imagination, but I’d didn’t love it either.  I felt kind of “meh”, take it or leave it about the book.  Maybe my tastes have matured, but I found it just too simplistic, and nothing I haven’t really read before.  Had I read it earlier, I might feel very differently.  If any of the sequels fall into my lap, I’ll probably read them, but I won’t go looking for them.

I do find it interesting that imdb show that there is a movie in development, to possibly be on screens in 2010.  That strikes me as odd that a book would be optioned 20 years after it was first released.  I wonder if there will ever be a film…?
