What was I thinking?

I’ve just finished Ian McEwan’s Saturday.  It was my second attempt at this novel and now I have no idea why I didn’t manage to finish it the first time.  Wow.  I must have been trying to read it while doing something else.  I’ve never read any of his books before, although I do own Atonement.  Set during the building up to the current war in Iraq, this book is a powerful statement on how small actions lead to big consequences, that things are rarely entirely as they seem, and the power of redemption, if not forgiveness.  The use of language is so wonderful I found myself reading bits out loud just to hear them.  Lovely, lovely book.  Read it, if you haven’t.  Give yourself the time, space and silence required.  It is worth it.
