Sexy Vampires

It doesn’t seem that long ago that the only popular fiction vampire books were Anne Rice’s Lestat books.  And the movie of course.  The came the “Blade” series of films, and the “Underworld” series.  Now it seems like vampires are everywhere.  In fact, paranormal romance, where elements of traditional romance are blended with speculative fiction is one of the fastest growing categories of fiction out there.  Vampires in current fiction range from the near-sublime  (The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova) to the faintly ridiculous  (Vampire manga.  No, I’m not kidding.  Anime vampires).   We’ve got the Twilight series, the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris, the Blood books by Tanya Huff, Kristin Cast’s House of Night novels and so on, and so on.

I’ve just finished Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian, the first of her Midnight Breed series.  This is a full on paranormal romance novel.  Not a fantasy novel with some romantic elements, but your full on, happily ever after, “I love you, too” books.  Did I mention the sex?  There’s A LOT of sweaty, vampire sex in this book.  If this book had been one of those paperbacks you borrow from your girlfriends when you’re a teenager, there would have been plenty of places where the book would have fallen open to the good parts, know what I mean?  I was actually quite glad to be reading this on my Sony Reader.  As much as I’ll admit to reading romance novels, I prefer that not to be too obvious.

I did like the way Adrian played around with the vampire legend-they aren’t demons and don’t make other vampires by biting people or sharing blood.  I was actually hoping for more of a fantasy novel, instead I got a sexy, paranomal romance.  It was entertaining, not terribly mentally taxing, and something new for me.  I don’t think I’ll seek out the others, but if one falls in my lap, I’d read it.
