Language is a powerful thing

June 8, 2009 at 10:14 am (Random Thoughts)

This weekend I was out and about on Saturday night with a bunch of  girls.  There may have been drinking involved.  Most were in their 20’s, one in her 30’s, and me; the lone 40 year old.  The policy now is to check ID pretty much everywhere.  A few places didn’t seem to care, or could tell that I was no dewy-eyed youth.  At the last club, however we were all checked.  As the 30-something and I were let in, the bouncer told us not to leave early.  When we asked why, he said that ladies of our “vintage” have a tendency to leave early…

Vintage?  Now, I understand that he was trying very hard to find a nice way of suggesting that we were older than the rest of the crowd, but really?  Open note to all bouncers, club doormen, etc.  Just skip any comments about age.  Don’t even try to be flattering.  Just skip it.  Trust me, we all know how old we are.
