Comfort Food

My city has a couple of very good local bookstores that are not part of any chain.  I was wandering through the larger of these the other day-on my quest to buy Ratio-and discovered new releases by some favourite authors.  As much as I’d like to buy them now, considering how many books I read in an average year, my salary does not support buying new hardbacks; at least not without forgoing the mortgage payment or groceries!  But I like to look and see what I need to keep an eye out for in paperback.

Right now my bedtime reading is a re-reading (re-re-reading? I’ve read this at least twice)  of Guy Gavriel Kay’s Tigana.  I will read anything of Kay’s that I come across-his characters are so beautifully written; they come alive and feel real to me.  His work is ostensibly Fantasy, but much of it seems to be a more imaginative re-telling of certain eras of history.  His first work, The Fionavar Tapestry is probably the closest to a traditional fantasy trilogy, but newer works seem closer and closer to a past reality that just happens to have fantastical elements. The books are not about the magic of the place, but the stories and lives of its people.   I love his work, and would recommend his books to anyone who has the least interest in the genre.  Right now my life is in a bit of personal upheaval, so spending my bedtime reading something that I know I love is very comforting, somehow.
