Yay for big, fat books.

I’ll read pretty much any genre, but I would definitely say that I’m a fan of Fantasy novels. SciFi Fantasy, you naughty monkeys. Recently I finished a pair by Karen Miller: The Innocent Mage and The Awakened Mage. Big, meaty books these, full of strong characters and a substantial storyline. Unlike some older SFF, not gender biased either. Ms. Miller has done a fine job with these and I will seek out some of her other work as well. I have only one tiny, little complaint. After two books and about 1200 pages of buildup, the finale was dealt with in only about 60 pages. A wee bit anticlimactic, actually. I was actually afraid that I was getting into a George R.R. Martin situation as I approached the end of the 2nd book-there really didn’t seem like there was enough book left to wrap everything up. While I understand the break between the first and second novels, this might have worked a little bit better as a trilogy so as to allow for just a bit more at the end. Doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy it though-I found myself reading so late into the night that I kept waking up when the book fell on me or I rolled over on it. If I’d rather read than sleep, that’s a good book.
